On Teaching

My teaching philosophy is centered on the student. I look at the fundamental elements of music, and filter them through the lens of their personality. What their favorite movie or sport? Do they love a particular musical artist? My goal is to transfer their passions to their instrument. When a student wants to play, they are their own best teacher.

Students may eventually require challenges and critique to progress and develop, but a knowledgeable music professional and an interest to learn is all they need at the start. Not all people want to be professional musicians later in life- and we as professional teachers should listen to them and manage their curriculum appropriately.
